Introducing the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: Unveiling the Latest Upgrades
Samsung has unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which builds upon the success of its predecessor while introducing several notable updates.
Design and Build
Visually, the Galaxy S24 Ultra closely resembles the S23 Ultra, but there are significant changes. The frame of the S24 Ultra is now crafted from titanium alloy instead of aluminum. This shift enhances durability and scratch resistance without increasing the device’s weight – in fact, the S24 Ultra weighs one gram less than the S23 Ultra. The new model is also slightly thinner (reduced by 0.3mm) and shorter (reduced by 1.1mm), thanks to slimmer bezels. The smartphone features Gorilla Glass Armor on both the front and rear, offering four times more toughness against cracking and a 75% reduction in reflectivity.
Flat Display for Enhanced User Experience
One notable change is the complete flattening of the display, moving away from the curved screen of its predecessor. This modification is sure to please users who prefer using glass screen protectors. The device features a 6.8-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a variable refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. Samsung has also boosted the screen’s brightness to 2,600 nits, accompanied by an improved Vision Booster.
Powerful Performance with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
Unlike the Galaxy S24 and S24+, the Galaxy S24 Ultra incorporates the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset in all markets. This ‘for Galaxy’ variant, presumably equipped with a higher-clocked Prime core, promises enhanced performance. To address thermal concerns across various tasks, Samsung has incorporated a significantly larger vapor chamber in the S24 Ultra.
AI-Enhanced Features for a Seamless Experience
The new Snapdragon chip unlocks a wide array of AI features on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. These include Live Translate, Interpreter, and Chat Assist, which enable real-time voice and text translation. Live Translate is integrated into the native phone app, while Interpreter facilitates live conversation transcription in two different languages. Chat Assist ensures that translated conversations feel natural and is integrated into the Samsung Keyboard. These features support 13 languages at launch.
The smartphone also features Android Auto, which summarizes incoming messages and suggests replies, simplifying tasks such as sending your ETA to someone.
Samsung Notes introduces Note Assist, which streamlines note-taking by summarizing notes, creating templates, and optimizing note formats. Transcript Assist leverages AI and Speech-to-Text to transcribe, summarize, and translate recordings.
Enhanced Camera System with AI Capabilities
The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s camera system is bolstered by AI enhancements. It introduces a new 50MP 5x telephoto camera with optical stabilization and an f/3.4 lens. The sensor, possibly the IMX854, boasts a larger size (1/2.52-inch) compared to its predecessor, allowing for improved 10x shots. Other camera components include a 200MP wide-angle unit, a 12MP ultrawide shooter with AF, a 10MP short telephoto lens, and a 12MP selfie camera.
AI-Driven Camera Features
The ProVisual Engine and a dedicated ISP Block for noise reduction are introduced this year. The ProVision Engine offers AI-powered tools such as Generative Edit, which erases objects and fills empty spaces, and Instant Slow-mo, which generates additional frames for smooth slow-motion videos. Nightography benefits from improved optical image stabilization and enhanced hand-shake compensation. The dedicated ISP Block addresses noise issues.
Additionally, Super HDR provides an HDR preview in the camera app’s viewfinder and displays photos and videos in HDR in the Gallery.
Battery, Storage, and Software
The Galaxy S24 Ultra is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery, supporting 45W wired and 15W wireless charging. It comes with 12GB of RAM and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB. The device runs Android 14 with One UI 6.1 and boasts an impressive 7-year software support.
Availability and Pricing
The Galaxy S24 Ultra is available for pre-order in Titanium Gray, Titanium Black, Titanium Violet, and Titanium Yellow. Samsung continues its tradition of offering a free storage upgrade for pre-orders, allowing customers to get a higher storage capacity model at the same price as the lower one during the pre-order period.
Pricing starts at $1,300/£1,250 for the 12GB/256GB model in the US and the UK, while in Europe, it begins at €1,450 for the 8GB/256GB variant.
